Gut Microbiome & BehaviorThe gut microbiome is a collection of microorganisms that inhabit the length of the gastrointestinal tract and can influence behavior and physiology. My research uses the house sparrow (Passer domesticus) as a model to investigate how the microbiome impacts exploratory behavior and cognition, as well as how captivity influences microbiome composition.

Feather degrading bacteria & Social communicationBirds such as peafowl (Pavo cristatus) use colorful plumage to communicate with both potential mates and rivals. Bacteria from the soil can colonize their feathers and alter their colors. My research is investigating how levels of feather degrading bacteria influence peafowl dominance and preening behavior.
